Jira Migration and Merge with Jira Data Center

Industry Automotive

Jira Dataceter Featured

Client’s Overview

A global automotive supplier faced challenges managing their customer support operations with two separate Jira instances: Jira Server and Jira Data Center. These instances had varying data, causing unnecessary hardware and maintenance costs. Additionally, coordinating user requests across both instances proved to be a daunting task. The management of user requests across the two instances was also challenging. The client wanted to migrate and merge the Jira Software project and Jira Service Management (JSM) projects, along with all existing data (including third-party plugins and Groovy scripts), from the Jira Server instance to the Jira Data Center instance. Later, they planned to decommission the Jira Server instance.

Business Challenges

The migration and merge project faced several challenges, including limited CPU resources leading to failures during upgrade and indexing, significant architectural changes during the upgrade from Jira version 6 to version 8, manual migration of automation rules due to database incompatibility, difficulty in upgrading over 200 groovy scripts without proper functionality manuals, changes in custom field IDs requiring script modifications, the need for user and group mapping using scripts as the migration plugin didn't support it, migration issues with Nfeed plugin data necessitating script-based migration, and post-migration changes in configurations due to the project being migrated in batches, particularly affecting Nfeed configurations.
